Current Question
Dear Rick,
My daughter freaks out when she gets anything less than an "A" in
school. Some parents would love my problem, but unfortunately my
girl is obsessed with success. When she doesn't succeed, she
becomes depressed and irritable, and difficult to be around?
Help! How can I deal with my perfectionist child?
Sincerely,
A stressed out mother
Dear Stressed,
You can deal with your child by being perfect yourself, of course.
Oh, you're like the rest of us? Then help her be like us mortals also.
Teach your child the value of failing (Proverbs 24:16). Look at
Edison; it took him 1000 tries before he invented what helps you and
me to read at night. The Philadelphia Phillies had to lose 70+
games on their way to become the world champions of baseball this
year (2008). To write a good poem, one must cross out many words
along the way. I imagine most great chefs burnt some oatmeal along
the way.
Whenever your girl fails, help her to see the bigger picture as
described here. Comfort your daughter and help her to express her
frustrations and negative thoughts appropriately. Give her some
time out from a disturbing task to take it up later. And pray
together; let her bring God into her assignments.
In His steps,
Rick
